Roland Mesnier, who worked at the White House for 26 years beginning with the Carter administration, said when President Bill Clinton came into the White House in 1993, he had a “scary” appetite.

“He could eat five or six pork chops.”  He recalls the episode of a strawberry cake he made one evening. Clinton devoured half of it all by himself, and the next morning he wanted more. ‘No one could find the cake,’ says Mesnier, who had a face-to-face with the distraught commander in chief. ‘Clinton was pounding on the table and shouting, “I want my goddamned cake.”’

Terracotta Vase in the Form of a Lobster Claw

    ca. 460 BC

    Greek, Classical

Because so many aspects of Greek life depended on the sea, a vase in the shape of a lobster claw is not surprising. It is, however, exceptional and may be a variant of the askos—a bag-shaped oil container provided with a vertical mouth and strap handle. The Dionysiac iconography of the lobster claw suggests that it was a novelty item used at symposia (drinking parties).

Cone of Urukagina, Sumerian, ca. 2350 BCE
Urukagina, or Uruinimgina, king of Lagash, is known for his implementation of extensive government reform. This inscription details his reforms against abuse of the “old days” described as the excessive powers of the wealthy classes over the disenfranchised. The reform also included a ban on the traditional practice of polyandry as well as violent punishments against women who violated this ban. For this reason, it is sometimes referred to as the first written evidence of oppression against women.
